Earl ended his career as a “young salt”/professional sailor in 1989 when he started his survey career with a brief term of employment at Greenehorne & O’Mara in Annapolis, MD. He then gratefully spent the next nine years in the colloquial system of surveying in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains at Hurt & Proffitt, Inc. in Lynchburg, VA while building a timberframe home on his wife’s family farm. In 1999 Earl and Cathy, his wife of 25 years, decided to move to Boulder, CO and the PLSS. After five years of employment at Drexel, Barrell & Co. he founded Zenith Land Surveying, Inc. (ZLS) in 2004. He worked happily as a “solo surveyor” for 10 years until 2014 when he began to expand the business. Earl started his career as an entry level rodman and has advanced through the survey profession as instrument operator, party chief, survey technician, field crew coordinator, and project manager before becoming the principal owner of ZLS. He continues to be active in both the field and office operations of the land survey work at ZLS. Earl was a staff writer for Professional Surveyor Magazine from 2004 to 2013, mostly writing fictional stories under the byline “The Humor in Surveying” and “Gigglebytes”. He has a regular column in Sideshots where he discusses the intricacies of the Colorado State Statutes and Board Rules pertaining to land surveying (see publications webpage). He served on the Board of the Central Colorado Professional Surveyors (CCPS) until 2011 when he was appointed by the Governor to the State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors (AES Board) at the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) where he served until 2019. He served as the AES Board Chair from 2013-2014. Earl and the ZLS staff pride themselves in specializing in the art of retracement land surveying.
